The Finnish Educational System

The following links provide information on the Finnish educational system and the current opportunities to study locally in Finland:

Lifelong Learning

It is most natural that adult people complement their previous education, or embark upon an entirely new sector through education in the current society. There is no age-related upper limit – learning can continue throughout the person’s life. Lifelong learning takes place in school environments and unofficial forums alike, by learning at work and through the Internet, for example.

Various life phases require skills and competence of different types. A person’s study needs may be related to improving vocational skills, a new examination, or his or her hobbies and interests. The most common reasons for participating in education as an adult include changes in working life and the person’s own health, and the need for vocational development. Education will improve your possibilities of finding your place in working life, helping you to endure in demanding work tasks and strengthens your feeling of coping at work and having more comprehensive control over your life.

Available Adult Education Opportunities in South Savo

South Savo offers a versatile selection of study opportunities to adult learners. You may complete studies that range from the full comprehensive school syllabus to university examinations. In addition, striving towards a particular examination or degree is not always a must. There is a wide variety of further education and supplementary training courses, short-term courses and freely selectable studies offering unlimited opportunities to study and develop your competence. In addition to Mikkeli, Pieksämäki and Savonlinna, education and training is also arranged in other locations.

Several education and training programmes are arranged with adult learners’ specific needs in mind.

  • Teaching takes place during evening hours and weekends or compact intensive periods, which facilitates studies while in employment.
  • Distance learning and self-study possibilities are continually improved.
  • Should you not find a suitable option from the current adult education palette, you may participate in studies that are intended for young people in particular. These courses are mainly conducted in the daytime.

Kontakti was a project funded by the European Social Fund to operate in the Mikkeli Region during the period 2001 – 2008. To date, the project has produced a number of guidebooks with information in English on educational opportunities and working life, to serve the needs of immigrant students in particular:

Financing Your Studies

Adult education may be financed and financially supported in a variety of ways. The receiving and extent of financial support depends on several factors, such as

  • your current life situation, educational background and work history
  • the form of education, teaching arrangements and institution in question.

If you are planning to study while in employment, you should also clarify the possibility of your employer contributing to the financing of your studies, even on a long-term basis.
Additional information on various forms of financial support including

  • who may apply for support
  • how to apply for support
  • what type of education are the various financial support forms intended for
  • how much and for how long a period can you get financial support

is available from educational establishments and employment offices.
